Diabetes is inextricably linked to obesity, which is believed to be one of the driving forces behind growing rates of the disease. Symptoms generally include excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss and extreme hunger. Fortunately, diet can act as an effective countermeasure against diabetes. Researchers believe emphasising certain foods in one’s diet could offer promising results. Rice bran, for example, has been shown to lower blood sugar levels by a staggering 30 percent in weeks.
Health complications associated with diabetes are diverse and severe, with extreme cases leading to amputation and heart attack.
Insulin resistance is key to managing blood sugar because it lowers levels of glucose by transporting it to cells, where it’s converted into energy.
People whose bodies develop insulin resistance stop responding to the hormone, which is a major hallmark of diabetes.
Fortunately, one body of research suggests rice bran products may support healthy blood sugar levels by improving insulin resistance.

Rice bran is considered one of the healthiest oils for the heart, but it’s also become alcoholism and obesity in recent years.
Researchers found that supplementation with products derived from stabilised rice bran brought significant changes to blood sugar levels of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics.
The findings, published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, found that rice bran oil-derived products could lower blood sugar levels by 30 percent.
Doctor Asaf Qureshi, lead investigator of the study, and his team found that consuming 20 grams of RiSoluble or RiceMucil per day, for 60 days, lowered blood sugar levels by 30 percent for type 1 diabetic and 20 percent for type 2 diabetics.
Doctor Qureshi noted: “This is a significant finding in view of the short duration of the study.
“One out of four diabetics in the 57-subject study lowered their daily dosage of medication by 30 percent to 60 percent, just by adding special stability rice brain derivatives, RiSolubles and RiceMucil, to their daily diet.
“While not all of the subjects were able to reduce their hyperglycaemic medications, all of the subjects were able to maintain a lower blood glucose level on these regimens as compared to their respective placebo groups.
“Not only did we find a decrease in the blood glucose levels, but we also found significant effects in lowering triglycerides and apolipoprotein B levels in these diabetic patients.”
Rice bran flaunts a host of properties that are beneficial for diabetics.
Extracted from the outer layer of rice, known as the bran layer, rice bran is believed to drive down glycosylated haemoglobin, and increase insulin levels.
In fact, Doctor Qureshi’s study established that serum insulin levels increased by four percent in response to rice bran water solubles.
Further research published in the American Journal of Medicine echoes these findings, stating that an oil derivative of rice bran offered promising results when combined with sesame oil.
The researchers noted that a “blend of 20 percent cold-pressed unrefined sesame oil and 80 percent physically refined rice bran oil as cooking oil, lowered hyperglycaemia and improved the lipid profile in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.”
Further ways to manage blood sugar include adequate hydration and regular exercise.
Avoiding simple carbohydrates is also important, because the body breaks these down into sugar, for the body to use as energy.
Finally, a diet should comprise mostly foods that score low on the glycemic index, as these cause blood sugar levels to rise.
