As part of Oprah’s Favorite Things list drop, the mogul listed a series of books produced by a Black-owned publishing brand. Each book tackles difficult topics, like racism and empathy, in a way that young kids understand them. A Kids Book About is 20 percent off for Black Friday on Amazon.
“I saw these books and immediately began thinking of kids to send them to,” Oprah said when she revealed her full list. “Each volume, by a different author, covers a vital subject (systemic racism, empathy, depression, and more) in a way children as young as 5 can grasp. Adults, you may find you learn a little something, too.”
The books make great gifts for parents and are amazing teaching tools for kids (and adults). The books usually come in at about 64 pages, so they aren’t super slim like many children’s books. Plus, you can refer to them as your child grows older as they encounter the situations presented in each book.
We highlighted three of the books in the series, but there are many to choose from. They tackle depression, bullying, white privilege, shame and optimism. You can find the book that works best for your child or the parent that you’re giving the book to.
We’re also rounding up other amazing Black Friday deals that you should check out, from Amazon to Nordstrom. There are plenty of deals that are live before Black Friday officially kicks off. You can get your holiday shopping done before Thanksgiving even happens.

Breaking Down Systematic Racism for $15.96 (originally $19.99)
Racism is hard for grown adults to understand, let alone kids. This book, which is for kids ages 6 and up, tackles how racism is injected into laws and institutions. It’s a must-read for everyone in your family.
A Lesson About Fitting In for $15.96 (originally $19.99)
Finding your place can be such a difficult thing, especially when you feel an outsider. A Kids Book About Belonging teaches kids how to belong to themselves, which is maybe something some of us still need to learn.
With Thanksgiving two days away, this book is particularly apt. Made for kids about 5 and up, this book teaches kids how to be grateful for what they have—even during tough and difficult times. But the book doesn’t equate giving thanks with pretending everything is fine.
